How the Countdown Counts Time
Calendar days first, then the clock
The countdown first counts how many whole days lie between now and the target, then shows the hours, minutes and seconds left on the clock. That matters twice a year. From noon on Saturday, October 31, 2026 to midnight at the start of Monday, November 2, the display reads 1 day 12 hours, because that is what your clock will say. In real elapsed time 37 hours pass, since clocks go back an hour at 2 AM on November 1.
Your time zone
The target is read in your device's time zone. A countdown to midnight on January 1 ends at your local midnight, so a friend in London reaches zero five hours before someone in New York. For an event set in another zone, such as a live stream at 8 PM Eastern, convert it first with the Timezone Converter.
Past dates and background tabs
If the date has already passed, the page says so and shows how many days ago it was. Browsers slow down timers in tabs you are not looking at, but every tick reads the real clock, so the countdown never drifts and it refreshes the moment you come back to the tab.
