Countdown Questions
How many days until New Year 2027?+
New Year's Day 2027 falls on Friday, January 1, 2027. The exact number of days changes every second — use the New Year preset above for a live countdown updated in real time. New Year's Eve is celebrated globally, with the first major city to ring in the new year being Kiribati (UTC+14), and the last being American Samoa (UTC−11). The Times Square ball drop in New York has been a tradition since 1907.
How many days until Christmas?+
Christmas Day falls on December 25. Use the Christmas preset above for an exact live countdown. The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on January 7 using the Julian calendar. Some countries, particularly in Northern Europe and Germany, celebrate primarily on Christmas Eve (December 24). Christmas is a public holiday in over 160 countries worldwide.
Can I count down to a specific time, not just a date?+
Yes. In the Custom Countdown form, set both the date and the time field. For example, to count down to midnight on New Year's Eve, set the date to January 1, 2027 and the time to 00:00. The countdown then shows exact days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining until that precise moment in your local timezone.
What happens when the countdown reaches zero?+
When the target date and time arrives, the countdown changes to a congratulatory screen showing that your event has arrived. The countdown stops at zero and displays a message with your event name. You can immediately start a new countdown by entering a new date or clicking another preset. No alarm or sound plays — this is a visual countdown tool only.
How many days until summer?+
Summer begins on the summer solstice, around June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. Use the Summer Solstice preset above. Meteorological summer (used by weather services) begins on June 1. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer begins around December 21. The exact date of the solstice shifts by a day each year depending on Earth's orbital position.
How is a countdown timer different from a stopwatch?+
A countdown timer counts down to zero from a future moment. A stopwatch counts up from zero, measuring elapsed time. A countdown tells you how long until an event; a stopwatch tells you how long since you started. This page counts down to a specific date and time. For how much time has passed since a past date, see our Days Between Dates calculator instead.
Do countdowns account for daylight saving time?+
Yes. This countdown uses your browser's local clock and JavaScript's Date object, which automatically adjusts for your local timezone and DST transitions. When your country switches clocks forward or back, the countdown adjusts accordingly. Events are shown in your local device time, not UTC.
How many days until Thanksgiving?+
US Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November each year. Use the Thanksgiving preset above for a live countdown. Thanksgiving in Canada falls on the second Monday of October. The dates change each year, but this calculator always computes the correct next occurrence dynamically based on the current date.
What is the origin of the countdown tradition?+
The countdown to zero was invented by German filmmaker Fritz Lang for his 1929 sci-fi film "Frau im Mond." He added a countdown sequence to build dramatic tension before a rocket launch. Real rocket engineers and NASA later adopted the countdown format because it created perfect public anticipation and gave technicians a shared time reference. Today the countdown is one of the most universal shared human experiences, from New Year's Eve to rocket launches.
What are the most popular countdown events worldwide?+
The most watched countdowns globally: New Year's Eve midnight (billions of viewers across time zones), Christmas Day, major sporting finals (Super Bowl, FIFA World Cup, Olympics opening ceremonies), space launches, and personal milestones like birthdays, weddings, and retirements. In the US, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and the Super Bowl are among the most tracked events. Use the custom form above to create a countdown to any event that matters to you.
