Hours Calculator Questions
How do I add hours and minutes together?+
Convert everything to minutes, add them, then convert back. Example: 3 hours 45 minutes + 2 hours 50 minutes = (3×60+45) + (2×60+50) = 225 + 170 = 395 minutes = 6 hours 35 minutes (395 ÷ 60 = 6 remainder 35). This calculator does this automatically. If the result exceeds 24 hours, it shows the total in hours and minutes without wrapping to the next day — useful for calculating total work hours over multiple days.
How do I calculate hours worked between two times?+
Use the Duration tab. Enter your start time and end time, then optionally subtract your break duration. The calculator gives you the net working hours. Example: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch break = 8.5 hours gross − 0.5 hours break = 8 hours net. If your shift crosses midnight (e.g., 10 PM to 6 AM), the calculator automatically assumes the end time is the following day and calculates correctly.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?+
Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the whole hours. Examples: 2h 30m = 2 + 30/60 = 2.5 hours. 1h 45m = 1 + 45/60 = 1.75 hours. 7h 20m = 7 + 20/60 = 7.333 hours. Decimal hours are used in payroll systems — multiply by your hourly rate to get pay. 8.5 hours × $25/hour = $212.50. This calculator always shows both HH:MM and decimal formats in the results.
How many minutes are in a day, week, or month?+
1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds. 1 week = 7 days = 168 hours = 10,080 minutes. 1 month (average) = 30.44 days = 730.5 hours = 43,830 minutes. 1 year = 365 days = 8,760 hours (8,784 in a leap year) = 525,600 minutes. For work-related calculations: a standard 40-hour work week = 2,080 hours per year. A full-time employee works approximately 1,960 productive hours per year after excluding holidays and vacation.
How do I calculate overtime hours?+
In the US, overtime is generally any hours worked over 40 in a single workweek (Fair Labor Standards Act). Use the Timesheet tab to add all your work sessions for the week. Any total over 40h 00m represents overtime, typically paid at 1.5× the regular hourly rate. Some states (like California) also require daily overtime for hours over 8 per day, and double-time for hours over 12. Always verify your employer's specific overtime policy and local labor laws.
How do timesheets work and how do I fill one out?+
A timesheet records the hours worked in each shift, typically with start time, end time, and break time for each day. Use the Timesheet tab to enter multiple sessions. Best practice: record times accurately at the start and end of each shift rather than estimating later. Round to the nearest quarter-hour if your employer uses that convention (e.g., 9:07 rounds to 9:00 or 9:15 depending on company policy). Total weekly hours are compared against your scheduled hours to calculate regular pay, overtime, and any shortfall.
What is military time and how do I convert it?+
Military time (also called 24-hour time) runs from 0000 to 2359 without AM/PM. To convert from 12-hour to 24-hour: AM times stay the same (9:30 AM = 09:30), except midnight which becomes 00:00. PM times: add 12 to the hour (1:30 PM = 13:30, 5:45 PM = 17:45, 12:00 PM noon stays 12:00). To convert back from 24-hour to 12-hour: subtract 12 from any hour over 12 (18:30 = 6:30 PM). This calculator accepts both 12-hour (with AM/PM) and 24-hour formats in the hour input field (0–23).
How do I calculate pay from hours worked?+
Enter your hourly rate in the Timesheet tab. The calculator multiplies total decimal hours by your hourly rate. Example: 38.5 hours × $22.50/hour = $866.25 gross pay. For mixed regular and overtime: total regular pay = 40 × $22.50 = $900. Overtime pay (if 38.5 < 40, no overtime in this example). If you worked 43 hours: regular pay = 40 × $22.50 = $900 + overtime = 3 × $33.75 (1.5×) = $101.25. Total gross = $1,001.25. This calculator shows gross pay only; deductions depend on your tax situation.
How many work hours are in a year?+
A standard US full-time employee works 52 weeks × 40 hours = 2,080 hours per year before any deductions. Subtract federal holidays (11 in the US) = 11 × 8 = 88 hours, leaving 1,992 hours. Subtract typical 2 weeks vacation = 80 hours, leaving approximately 1,912 productive hours. In the UK, a standard work year is also around 2,080 hours (40h × 52 weeks), but typical workers receive 28 days paid leave (5.6 weeks), reducing productive hours to about 1,856. Part-time hours scale proportionally.
Why do some months have 4 or 5 weekends?+
The number of weekends in a month depends on which day of the week the month starts and how many days it has. A 31-day month starting on Saturday has 5 full weekends. A 28-day February can have as few as 4 weekends and only 20 weekdays. This matters for businesses that pay bi-weekly or for calculating monthly work hours. In a year with 261 weekdays, some months contribute 23 weekdays and others only 20, affecting monthly payroll calculations. This is why some payroll periods have 3 pay cycles in a month for bi-weekly employees.
