Business Days vs Calendar Days

10 business days after Monday, October 5, 2026 is Monday, October 19, or Tuesday, October 20 if you also skip Columbus Day on October 12. Counting starts on the next working day and skips Saturdays and Sundays. Tick the federal holiday box above to skip the 11 US federal holidays as well.

Business days (also called working days or weekdays) are days when businesses are normally open: typically Monday through Friday, excluding weekends. In contrast, calendar days count every day of the week including Saturday and Sunday.

The difference matters significantly for deadlines. A 10 business day deadline starting Monday covers two full weeks on the calendar (14 calendar days). A 30 business day period spans approximately 6 calendar weeks. Always check whether a deadline uses calendar or business days.

Legal & Contract Deadlines

Many legal deadlines specify business days: court filings, contract notice periods, regulatory responses. A "5 business day" response window starting on Thursday gives you until the following Thursday (skipping the weekend). When in doubt, use the stricter (shorter) interpretation and consult a professional.

Middle Eastern Work Week

In Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait the working week runs Sunday through Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend (the UAE moved to a Monday to Friday week in 2022). Use the custom work week selector to set Sun-Thu as working days for accurate calculations in these regions.

Banking & Finance

Settlement periods are quoted in business days. US stock trades have settled T+1, one business day after the trade date, since May 28, 2024. ACH transfers take 1 to 3 business days. Wire transfers typically same day or next business day. Weekends and bank holidays extend these windows.

Shipping & Delivery

"5 to 7 business days" shipping means 5 to 7 weekdays from dispatch: order Monday, and 5 business days later is the following Monday. Weekend delivery depends on the carrier and service. Ground shipping estimates are usually quoted in business days, not calendar days.

New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027, which gives 2027 twelve holiday closures for federal offices. Banks follow a slightly different rule: the Federal Reserve closes on the same holidays, but when one falls on a Saturday its banks stay open the Friday before. Friday, July 3, 2026 is therefore a day off for federal employees but a normal business day at the Federal Reserve.

How the Count Works

Add or subtract mode

The start date is day zero and counting begins on the next working day. Monday plus 5 business days is the following Monday, and Saturday plus 1 business day is Monday. Subtracting works the same way backward.

Count Between mode

The start date is not counted and the end date is. Monday, September 21 to Friday, September 25, 2026 is 4 business days. If your rule counts both ends, add 1 when the start date is itself a working day.

Frequently Asked Questions

A business day is any day of the week that is not a weekend. In most Western countries, this means Monday through Friday. A standard business week has 5 business days. Business days typically exclude public holidays as well, though this varies by country, industry, and contract. For purely weekend-based calculations (no holidays), this calculator gives exact results. US federal holidays can be skipped with the checkbox under the work week; other holidays need to be added manually.

A typical month has 20 to 23 business days, depending on how many weekdays fall in the month. The average is about 21.7 weekdays per month. Specifically: a 28-day month always has 20 weekdays; 29 days = 20 or 21; 30 days = 20 to 22 weekdays; 31 days = 21 to 23 weekdays. February typically has 20 business days; months starting on different days of the week shift the count slightly. Use the "Count Between" mode to find the exact number for any specific month.

The result will show the exact calendar date 10 working days from today, skipping weekends automatically. 10 business days is typically two full calendar weeks. If today is Monday, 10 business days later is the Monday two weeks later, and from a Friday it is the Friday two weeks later.

Only if you ask it to. Tick "Also skip US federal holidays" under the work week and the calculator skips the 11 federal holidays on their observed dates (a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before, a Sunday holiday to the Monday after). State, bank and company holidays differ, so for those add one business day for each holiday inside your period, and check legally critical deadlines against the rule that governs them.

In practice, "business days" and "working days" mean the same thing in most contexts: Monday through Friday, excluding weekends. However, "working days" sometimes has a broader meaning that includes the specific hours or shifts an organization operates, which could include Saturday shifts for some industries. In legal and financial contexts, "business days" is the more precise term and almost universally means Mon-Fri. When in doubt about what a specific contract or regulation means, consult the relevant legal or regulatory guidance.

The convention varies by context: most financial and legal systems start counting from the day after the event (the start date is day 0, and counting begins on day 1). So "deliver within 5 business days of Monday" means delivery by the following Monday (counting Tue=1, Wed=2, Thu=3, Fri=4, Mon=5). This calculator uses the same convention: the start date is not counted, and business days begin from the next working day. Always verify the exact convention for legally binding deadlines.

A common year of 365 days has 260 or 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday), and a leap year has 260 to 262, before holidays. The exact count depends on which day January 1 falls: if it's a weekday, you get more weekdays early in the year. Subtracting the US federal holidays leaves 250 federal working days in 2026 and 249 in 2027. Use the Count Between mode with Jan 1 and Dec 31 for the exact number in any specific year.

T+1 means a trade settles 1 business day after the trade date. US stock trades moved from T+2 to T+1 on May 28, 2024, so a stock bought on Monday settles on Tuesday, and one bought on Friday settles the following Monday unless it is a market holiday. Business day counting in finance never includes weekends or market holidays. ACH bank transfers typically take 1 to 3 business days. Wire transfers settle same day if sent before the cutoff, or next business day otherwise. Credit card payments post within 1 to 2 business days.

Carriers quote shipping time in business days from the day they pick up or process your shipment: not necessarily the order date. "Ships in 1 to 2 business days" means the carrier picks up within 1 to 2 weekdays of your order. "Delivers in 5 to 7 business days" means transit time once shipped. Order on Friday: processing starts Monday (1 business day), ships Tuesday (2 business days). 5 business day transit from Tuesday = the following Tuesday. Total: about 8 calendar days from order to delivery. Weekend delivery depends on the carrier and the service level, so check whether the estimate counts Saturdays.

It counts the end date but not the start date, so Monday to Friday of the same week is 4 business days. That matches "within 4 business days of Monday". If your contract or policy counts both the first and the last day, add 1 when the start date is a working day.
