How Does the Love Calculator Work?
This love calculator is entertainment only: it turns the letters of two names into a number from 1 to 99 and cannot predict anything about a real relationship. The same two names always give the same score, in either order. Across thousands of name pairs the average score is about 51%, and only about 6% of pairs reach 90% or more.
The love calculator uses name numerology, an ancient practice of assigning numeric values to letters, to generate a compatibility score between two people. Each letter in both names is converted to a number, the values are combined, and processed through a compatibility algorithm to produce a percentage between 0 and 100.
Name numerology has roots in ancient Greek, Hebrew, and Indian traditions. It assigns each letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 9. The resulting numbers are believed by some to reveal personality traits and compatibility. This calculator uses that tradition purely for entertainment.

Famous Love Compatibility Scores
People often test celebrity couples to see what the calculator produces. The scores are purely based on name numerology and not a reflection of real relationships. The fun is in the surprise of the number and sharing results with friends. Love calculators have been popular since the early days of the internet precisely because they are shareable, surprising, and completely harmless.
How the Score Is Actually Calculated
There is no hidden magic. The calculator follows five fixed steps:
- Join both names and keep only the letters A to Z. Spaces, numbers, hyphens and accented letters are dropped.
- Give each letter its place in the alphabet (A = 1, B = 2, up to Z = 26) and add them all up.
- Multiply that total by 7,919, add 31 for every letter, and keep the remainder after dividing by 89.
- Add the remainder of three times the letter total divided by 13, plus 1, and keep the last two digits.
- If the result is below 5, it is replaced by a value from 35 to 64. The final score is kept between 1 and 99.
Worked example: Anna and Tom
ANNA is 1 + 14 + 14 + 1 = 30 and TOM is 20 + 15 + 13 = 48, so the letter total is 78 across 7 letters. Step 3 gives (78 × 7,919 + 7 × 31) mod 89 = 61. Step 4 adds (78 × 3) mod 13 = 0, plus 1, for 62%. Because only the total and the letter count matter, Tom and Anna also get 62%.
How Often Each Score Comes Up
We ran every pairing of 100 common American first names through the formula, 4,950 couples in all.
| Score | Pairs | Share | Verdict shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 to 99 | 309 | 6.2% | Soulmates! |
| 80 to 89 | 547 | 11.1% | Perfect Match! |
| 70 to 79 | 578 | 11.7% | Great Compatibility! |
| 60 to 69 | 546 | 11.0% | Good Match! |
| 50 to 59 | 550 | 11.1% | Worth Exploring! |
| 40 to 49 | 608 | 12.3% | Opposites Attract? |
| 1 to 39 | 1,812 | 36.6% | Challenging Combo! |
So a low score is the most common outcome, not a warning sign. Try full names, nicknames or middle names and the result will jump around, which is part of the fun.

Love Calculator Questions
How does the love calculator work?
The love calculator uses name numerology to generate a compatibility score. Each letter in both names is converted to a numeric value, combined, and processed through a compatibility algorithm to produce a percentage score between 0 and 100. The same names always produce the same result.
Is the love calculator accurate?
No. The love calculator is for entertainment purposes only. Real relationship compatibility depends on shared values, communication, trust, and emotional connection, not name numerology. Enjoy the result, but do not make relationship decisions based on it.
What does a high love score mean?
A score above 80% indicates high name compatibility by numerology standards. 60-80% is good. Below 60% shows differences in name numerology but does not mean a relationship cannot thrive. Many wonderful couples would score low, and vice versa.
Why do the same names always get the same score?
The algorithm is deterministic, meaning the same input always produces the same output. This is by design. Numerology assigns fixed values to letters, so the calculation is consistent. If you want a different result, try using a nickname or middle name.
What is name numerology?
Name numerology is the practice of assigning numeric values to letters in a name and using the resulting numbers to draw insights about personality or compatibility. Each letter is assigned a number from 1 to 9. The tradition has roots in ancient Greece, Hebrew kabbalah, and Indian Vedic numerology. It has no scientific basis but remains popular as a form of entertainment.
Can I test celebrity couples?
Yes. Entering celebrity names is one of the most popular uses of love calculators. The scores are based purely on the letters in the names and have no connection to the real relationship. It is a fun way to start conversations and compare results with friends.
Does the order of names matter?
No. The algorithm combines both names symmetrically, so entering Name A + Name B gives the same result as Name B + Name A. The score is always the same regardless of which name goes in which field.
What if I get a low score?
A low score means nothing about your actual relationship. Numerology assigns values to letters, not to people. Some of history's greatest love stories would likely score poorly on a name compatibility calculator. Use nicknames, full names, or middle names to try different combinations for fun.
Is the love calculator private?
Yes. The names you enter are processed entirely in your browser and never sent to any server. No data is stored, logged, or shared. The calculation happens locally on your device, so your privacy is fully protected.
What are other fun compatibility tests?
Beyond name numerology, popular compatibility methods include zodiac sign compatibility (based on birth dates), Chinese zodiac compatibility (based on birth year), personality type compatibility (MBTI), and attachment style compatibility. None of these are scientifically validated for predicting relationship success, but all are enjoyable to explore.
What is the average love calculator score?
About 51%. Across 4,950 pairs of common first names the mean score was 50.8%, a little over a third of pairs scored below 40%, and about 6% scored 90% or higher.
Can two different couples get the same score?
Yes. The formula only uses the total of the letter values and the number of letters, so any two couples with the same letter total and the same letter count get exactly the same percentage, even if the names are completely different.
