Why Area Factors Are Squared
Area is length times width, so the conversion factor gets squared too. One foot is 12 inches, so one square foot is 12 × 12 = 144 square inches. One yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 9 square feet. One meter is 3.28084 feet, so a square meter is 3.28084² = 10.7639 square feet.
Worked example: a 12 by 15 foot room
12 ft × 15 ft = 180 sq ft. In metric, 180 × 0.09290304 = 16.72 m². You get the same answer by converting each side first: 3.6576 m × 4.572 m = 16.72 m².
Common mistakes
- Using the length factor. Dividing 180 sq ft by 3.28084 gives 54.86, which is not an area in any unit. Divide by 10.7639 instead.
- "10 feet square" is not "10 square feet". A room 10 feet square measures 10 by 10 feet, which is 100 sq ft. Ten square feet is a patch about 3.16 feet on each side.
- Old deeds and the survey acre. Older US land records may use the US survey foot. A survey acre is about 0.016 m² bigger than an international acre, which only matters for very large tracts.
