Unit Conversion Reference

To convert between units, multiply by the conversion factor: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 0.4536 kg, 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters, 1 mile = 1.609 km. Temperature is the only category that needs a formula instead of a single factor.

The converter above covers seven categories in one place: length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed and data storage, in both metric (SI) and US customary units. The factors come from the official definitions published by NIST, most of which have been exact since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959.

Temperature Needs a Formula

Celsius and Fahrenheit start from different zero points, so a single multiplier does not work. Use these instead:

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
  • Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15
  • Fahrenheit to Rankine: °R = °F + 459.67

Room temperature20 °C68 °F
Body temperature37 °C98.6 °F
Water boils (sea level)100 °C212 °F
Moderate oven177 °C350 °F

Quick estimate without a calculator: double the Celsius figure and add 30. At 20 °C that gives 70 °F against an exact 68 °F, close enough for the weather.

US and UK Units With the Same Name

Several units share a name but not a size. Recipes, fuel figures and shipping weights from the UK use the imperial versions.

Gallon3.785 L4.546 L
Pint473 mL568 mL
Fluid ounce29.57 mL28.41 mL
Ton2,000 lb (907 kg, short ton)2,240 lb (1,016 kg, long ton)

A metric ton, sometimes spelled tonne, is 1,000 kg and sits between the two. The US gallon is about 17% smaller than the UK gallon, which is why UK miles per gallon figures look better than US ones for the same car.

Data Storage: 1,000 or 1,024?

Drive makers count in decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB and 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows counts in binary units, where each step is 1,024, but still labels them GB. That is why a new 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB in File Explorer. Nothing is missing; it is the same number of bytes described two ways. The converter above offers both: KB, MB, GB and TB are decimal, while KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB are binary.

How to Convert Any Unit by Hand

  1. Find the factor from the table above, or look up how many base units one of your units is worth.
  2. Break mixed units into one unit first. A height of 5 ft 10 in is 70 inches.
  3. Multiply by the factor. 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm.
  4. Going the other way, divide. 180 cm ÷ 2.54 = 70.9 inches, which is 5 ft 10.9 in.
  5. Round at the end, not in the middle. Rounding each step compounds the error.
Method and sources. Length, mass and US volume factors follow NIST Special Publication 811 and the 1959 international yard and pound definitions (1 yd = 0.9144 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg). Imperial volumes follow the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985. Data storage uses SI decimal prefixes.

Unit Conversion Questions

One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters, by international definition since 1959. This means: 1 foot = 30.48 cm, 1 yard = 91.44 cm, 1 meter = 39.3701 inches. To convert inches to centimeters, multiply by 2.54. To convert centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54.

Multiply the Celsius value by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. Formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Example: 20°C = (20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F. To go the other way: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin = Celsius + 273.15.

One pound equals exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Conversely, one kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. One stone = 14 pounds = 6.35 kg. One ounce = 28.349523125 grams. The pound and ounce values are exact, fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement.

One US gallon = 3.785411784 liters exactly. The UK imperial gallon is larger: 4.54609 liters. Other key volume conversions: 1 liter = 4.22675 US cups = 33.814 US fl oz = 1,000 ml. 1 US cup = 236.588 ml. Always check whether "gallon" means US or UK.

100 km/h = 62.137 mph. The conversion factor is: 1 km/h = 0.621371 mph. To go the other way: 1 mph = 1.60934 km/h. Other speed conversions: 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h = 2.237 mph. 1 knot = 1.852 km/h = 1.151 mph.

One acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,046.86 square meters = 0.4047 hectares. One hectare = 2.471 acres = 10,000 m². One square mile = 640 acres. These area conversions are used in real estate, land surveying, agriculture and urban planning.

The metric system (SI) uses base units of meters, kilograms and liters, with decimal multipliers (kilo=1000, milli=0.001). Nearly every country uses it for everyday measurement; the US is the main exception. The imperial system uses inches, pounds and gallons with irregular conversion factors. The US uses a variation called US customary units, which differs slightly from UK imperial (e.g., US gallon ≠ UK gallon).

In the decimal (SI) system: 1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000 KB. In the binary system used by operating systems: 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. This difference explains why a "1 TB" hard drive shows as 931 GB in Windows. The converter above offers both decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB).

Multiply miles by 1.60934 to get kilometers. Example: 5 miles = 8.047 km. A marathon, 42.195 km, is 26.22 miles. To go the other way, divide by 1.60934 (or multiply by 0.62137). The exact SI definition: 1 international mile = 1,609.344 meters.

Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature, where matter has the least possible thermal energy. It equals 0 Kelvin = −273.15°C = −459.67°F. The Kelvin scale starts at absolute zero, making it essential for scientific calculations. Room temperature is approximately 293 K = 20°C = 68°F.

No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures weight. They only line up for water and liquids of similar density: one US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces. For flour, honey or oil the two numbers differ a lot, so a recipe that says 8 oz of flour means weight, not a measuring cup. One US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL; one ounce is 28.35 g.

Turn the height into inches first, then multiply by 2.54. For 5 ft 10 in: 5 × 12 + 10 = 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm. Common heights: 5 ft 4 in = 162.6 cm, 5 ft 8 in = 172.7 cm, 6 ft = 182.9 cm. To go from centimeters to feet, divide by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12; the remainder is the inches.
