Most people significantly underestimate how wealthy they are in global terms. The global median income is about $9.25 a day per person, or roughly $3,380 a year, in the 2021 PPP dollars the World Bank uses (2024 data). In 2025 US dollars that is about $11 a day. By this measure even a modest income in a rich country places you in the upper half of the world, and a middle-class US or Western European household puts each member in roughly the top 5 to 15%.
This calculator uses World Bank income distribution data to estimate your global percentile. Because cost of living varies enormously between countries, the comparison uses purchasing power parity (PPP) adjustments to make incomes comparable across different economies.

Household size changes the answer more than most people expect. The same paycheck supports one person very comfortably by world standards, but split four ways it lands closer to the global upper middle.

These are incomes per person, not per household. The top rows are the least precise part of the data, because household surveys tend to miss the very richest families.
What PPP Means and Why It Matters
Purchasing power parity (PPP) converts money into what it actually buys. A dollar's worth of rupees buys far more food and rent in India than a dollar buys in Ohio, so comparing incomes at market exchange rates would make poorer countries look even poorer than they are. The World Bank's 2025 PPP factor for household spending in India is 19.84 rupees per international dollar, so an income of 300,000 rupees a year equals about 15,100 international dollars.
This calculator divides your income by your country's PPP factor, adjusts it to 2021 prices (the base year of the World Bank's global distribution) and then finds your percentile. The result is an estimate: the data mix income surveys and consumption surveys, and the latest full year is 2024.

Does a high global ranking mean I am wealthy?
Not necessarily in local terms. Global rankings can be misleading due to cost of living differences. $50,000 per year places you in the top 2-3% globally, but this income may be below the median in high cost-of-living cities like New York, San Francisco, London, or Sydney. PPP adjustments help, but local housing costs, healthcare, and education expenses mean global percentile is only one measure of financial wellbeing.

What is purchasing power parity (PPP)?
Purchasing power parity is an adjustment method that accounts for the different costs of living across countries. $10 in the US buys much less than $10 in India or Nigeria, so direct income comparisons are misleading. PPP-adjusted figures convert incomes to a common scale based on what money can actually buy in each country. This calculator uses PPP adjustments to make global comparisons more accurate.

Understanding global wealth distribution builds perspective and can influence decisions around charitable giving, lifestyle satisfaction, and financial goals. Research shows that people in wealthy countries often feel financially average, unaware that their income places them in the global top few percent. This can lead to what researchers call "relative deprivation", feeling poor compared to immediate peers despite being wealthy in global terms.
How has global inequality changed over time?
The picture is mixed. Extreme poverty (under $3.00 a day) fell from 43% of the world in 1990 to 10.4% in 2024, mostly thanks to growth in China, India and other Asian economies (World Bank PIP). Progress has slowed since 2020, and extreme poverty is now concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa and in fragile and conflict-affected countries.
What is the richest 1% globally?
By income, the global top 1% starts at about $168 a day per person in 2021 PPP dollars, roughly $72,800 a year in 2025 US dollars (World Bank PIP, 2024 data). That is per person, so a household of four needs about four times as much. Wealth (assets minus debts) is ranked separately and the top 1% threshold there is far higher.
How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator provides estimates based on World Bank and Our World in Data income distribution figures. Actual global income data has significant gaps, particularly for informal economies in developing countries where many people do not report income through formal channels. The figures are best estimates using the most recent available data and should be interpreted as approximate global percentiles rather than precise rankings.
Is the ranking per person or per household?
Per person. The World Bank measures the global distribution as household income or spending divided by the number of people in the household, so this calculator does the same. That is why a $60,000 household of four ranks lower than a single person earning $30,000: $15,000 each versus $30,000.
What is the US median household income in 2025?
The Census Bureau reported a median household income of $87,460 for 2025, up 2.6% from $85,210 in 2024 and the highest on record since 1967. Half of US households earned more and half earned less. With about 2.5 people in the average household, that works out to roughly the top 5% of the world per person.
