The Science of Drunk Personalities

Alcohol affects the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and social judgment. As inhibitions lower, personality traits that are normally held in check tend to emerge more strongly. This is why some people become more affectionate, others more philosophical, and some suddenly believe they are exceptional chefs.

Research from the University of Missouri found that most people have a distinct "drunk personality" that differs from their sober self. The study identified four main drunk types: the Mary Poppins (kind and together), the Hemingway (minimal change), the Nutty Professor (uninhibited and outgoing), and the Hyde (more negative personality change). Most people fall somewhere between these types depending on how much they have consumed.

The "will I regret this?" phenomenon is well-documented in psychology. Alcohol reduces activity in the amygdala, which processes fear and consequences, while simultaneously reducing prefrontal cortex activity. The result: actions that would normally trigger a warning feel fine in the moment. This is why decisions made after several drinks often look very different in the morning.

Drunk Test Questions
Is this a real BAC calculator?+
No. This is a fun quiz for entertainment only. It does not calculate actual blood alcohol content. For a medically-based BAC calculator using the Widmark formula, visit our Health section. Never drive after drinking, regardless of quiz results.
What is a drunk alter ego?+
A drunk alter ego is the personality that tends to emerge when someone drinks alcohol. Research shows that alcohol reliably amplifies certain personality traits while suppressing others. Common types include the Philosopher (suddenly has answers to life), the Dancer (discovers hidden talent), the Chef (convinced cooking is the answer), and the Adventurer (books flights at midnight).
Why do people make bad decisions when drunk?+
Alcohol reduces activity in the prefrontal cortex, which governs decision-making, impulse control, and future-thinking. At the same time, it reduces amygdala activity, which processes fear and consequences. The combination means actions that would normally trigger internal warnings feel reasonable in the moment. This is the neurological explanation for texting exes, buying unnecessary items, and agreeing to help people move.
What are the drunk levels in the quiz?+
The five drunk levels in this quiz are: Sober Suspicious (you say you are fine, maybe you are), Pleasantly Fuzzy (one or two drinks in, all is well), Party Mode Activated (the fun version of you has arrived), Floor Is Lava Level (things have become interesting), and Call a Responsible Adult (someone needs to hold your phone and your house keys).
How do I avoid drunk regrets?+
The most effective strategy is to set a rule before you start drinking: put your phone on airplane mode after a certain hour, give your card to a sober friend, or designate one person as the decision-checker for the group. The rule works because you set it when your prefrontal cortex is still fully functional. It is much harder to override a rule you made for yourself than to resist an impulse in the moment.
