Salary to Hourly Conversion
To turn a salary into an hourly rate, divide it by 2,080, the paid hours in a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. A $65,000 salary is $31.25 an hour; to go the other way, multiply the hourly rate by 2,080, so $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. The calculator also shows the rate per hour you actually work once paid time off is taken out.
Converting between annual salary and hourly rate depends on how many hours you actually work per year. The standard assumption is 2,080 hours (40 hours/week × 52 weeks). But with 2 weeks PTO and 10 holidays, actual working hours are closer to 1,920.
The formula: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary / (Hours per Week x Weeks Worked). Using actual working weeks matters for accurate comparison when evaluating a job offer. A $65,000 salary working 50 weeks (2 weeks PTO) at 40 hours/week = $32.50/hour: not $31.25 (which assumes 52 weeks).

Paid Hours vs Hours You Actually Work
Why 2,080
Payroll systems and job boards convert salaries with 2,080 hours because a salaried employee is paid for 52 weeks, including vacation and holidays. The calendar agrees closely: 2026 has 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours at 8 a day.
When to use the lower number
If you want to compare a salaried job with hourly or contract work, look at the rate per hour you actually work. Paid time off raises it, and unpaid overtime lowers it: $65,000 for 45 hours a week over 48 working weeks is $30.09 an hour, not $31.25.
Common mistakes
- Taking vacation weeks off the paid weeks and then again as time off, which counts them twice.
- Comparing a gross hourly rate with a take-home salary, or the other way round.
- Ignoring benefits: a job with health insurance and a 401(k) match can beat a higher hourly contract rate with none.
