How Random Numbers Are Generated
This generator uses JavaScript's Math.random(), which implements a pseudo-random number algorithm (PRNG) seeded by the browser's environment. For most everyday uses — games, decisions, classroom exercises — this is perfectly adequate.
For cryptographic or high-stakes applications, use a hardware-based source like Random.org (atmospheric noise) or your operating system's entropy pool (/dev/urandom on Linux).
No Duplicates
When disabled, each number appears only once — like drawing numbered balls from a lottery drum without replacement.
Large Ranges
Works for any range that fits in JavaScript's 53-bit integer limit. The maximum safe integer is 9,007,199,254,740,991.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pseudo-random number?+
A pseudo-random number is generated by a deterministic algorithm that produces sequences that appear random. JavaScript uses a PRNG based on xorshift128+. Unlike true random numbers (from thermal noise, radioactive decay etc.), PRNGs are reproducible if you know the seed — though the seed is unpredictable in practice.
How do I pick a winner from a list?+
Enter 1 as minimum, the total number of contestants as maximum, set count to 1, and click Generate. Assign each contestant a number beforehand. Alternatively use the Name Picker Wheel which lets you enter names directly.
Can I generate numbers without repeats?+
Yes. Set "Allow Duplicates" to No. The generator will ensure each number appears only once in the output. Note: if you request more unique numbers than exist in the range, an error is shown.
What is the most random number between 1 and 10?+
Statistically, 7 is famously perceived as the most "random" number by humans when asked to pick one — it appears in studies across many cultures. True randomness has no "most random" number; each has equal probability.
How do lottery random numbers work?+
National lotteries use certified hardware random number generators (RNGs) or air-blown numbered balls. Regulatory bodies audit these systems. The probability of any combination is identical regardless of whether you use quick-pick or choose your own numbers.
Can I generate random decimals?+
This tool generates integers. For random decimals, adjust your range — e.g. generate 0 to 1000 and divide the result by 1000 to get 3 decimal places.
What is the difference between random and shuffle?+
Random generation picks numbers from a range with specified rules. Shuffling takes an existing ordered list and rearranges it randomly. Our no-duplicates mode is equivalent to a shuffle of a subset of the range.
How are random numbers used in statistics?+
Random sampling is fundamental to statistics: surveys, clinical trials, and quality control all rely on random selection to ensure unbiased samples. Monte Carlo simulations use millions of random numbers to model complex systems like stock markets or nuclear reactions.
Is 0 a valid random number?+
Yes. If your minimum is 0, zero is a valid output with equal probability to any other number in the range. The calculator includes both endpoints (inclusive range).
What are common uses for random number generators?+
Board games and tabletop RPGs (dice replacement), lotteries and raffles, classroom activities, A/B test assignment, password generation, simulations, shuffling playlists, picking a restaurant, and breaking decision deadlocks.
