This Day in History Questions
Where does this data come from?+
All historical events, births, and deaths are sourced live from the Wikimedia Foundation's free public API (api.wikimedia.org). The API returns the Wikipedia "On This Day" data for any date, covering thousands of years of recorded history. The data is updated by Wikipedia's volunteer editor community and is free to use under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence. Links in each entry take you directly to the relevant Wikipedia article for further reading.
How far back does the history go?+
The Wikipedia "On This Day" dataset covers events from ancient history through to the present day. The earliest entries often date to hundreds of years BC for major civilizations (Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Chinese). Coverage becomes much denser from the Renaissance onward, and very dense for the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The births and deaths sections include historical figures from antiquity through contemporary times. You can browse any date of the year using the date picker at the top of the page.
Why are some dates more historically eventful than others?+
The number of recorded events per day varies significantly. Dates that coincide with major battles, political transitions, scientific discoveries, or cultural milestones tend to have more entries. Some dates have 30+ events recorded; others have fewer. This partly reflects the actual density of documented history but also the focus of Wikipedia's editorial community, which skews toward events significant in Western and global history. If you notice a gap in a particular regional or cultural history, Wikipedia accepts contributions from editors worldwide.
Can I browse historical events for any date?+
Yes. Use the date picker at the top of the page to jump to any date of the year (month and day). The "Previous" and "Next" buttons let you step through days one at a time. Note that the Wikipedia API returns events for the month and day only — not for a specific year — so the results always show what happened on that calendar date across all years of recorded history, sorted by year.
What is the difference between Events, Births, and Deaths tabs?+
Events covers historical occurrences: battles, treaties, discoveries, inventions, political events, natural disasters, and other milestones. Births lists notable people born on this date across history, from ancient philosophers and medieval monarchs to modern scientists, artists, and leaders. Deaths lists notable people who died on this date. Each entry shows the year and a brief description. Clicking any linked name or event in the description takes you to the full Wikipedia article for that person or event.
Why does history matter today?+
Understanding history provides context for the present. The borders of modern nations, the rights we hold, the technology we use, and the cultural norms we live by are all products of historical events. Studying what happened on a given day across centuries reveals patterns: how power shifts, how ideas spread, how disasters reshape societies, and how individuals change the course of events. The philosopher George Santayana wrote that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it — though historians note the full picture is more complex. History is not just a record of the past; it is a lens for understanding the present.
Who are some famous people born on today's date?+
Use the Births tab above to see everyone born on this date across history. Wikipedia's dataset includes monarchs, scientists, artists, writers, politicians, military leaders, athletes, and other notable figures from all cultures and time periods. Some dates have remarkably famous birthdays — for example, April 23 is associated with both William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, arguably the greatest writers in English and Spanish literature respectively, who died on the same date in 1616 (though different calendar systems mean the actual deaths were 10 days apart).
What were the most historically significant days ever?+
Historians debate this, but some dates with outsized historical impact include: September 11, 2001 (terrorist attacks reshaping geopolitics for decades); July 4, 1776 (US Declaration of Independence); November 9, 1989 (fall of the Berlin Wall); June 6, 1944 (D-Day, largest seaborne invasion in history); October 29, 1929 (Black Tuesday, start of the Great Depression); October 4, 1957 (Sputnik launch, beginning of the Space Age); August 6, 1945 (atomic bombing of Hiroshima). Use the date picker to explore each of these dates and see all the other events that shared that calendar day across history.
Are all historical facts on Wikipedia reliable?+
Wikipedia is written and edited by volunteers and uses a policy of verifiability and neutral point of view. Major historical facts are well-sourced and reliable. However, articles can contain errors, bias, or gaps, particularly for less-documented regions and periods. For academic or professional research, always verify information using primary sources, peer-reviewed journals, or specialized reference works. Wikipedia explicitly states it should not be cited as a primary source. For general historical curiosity and education, it is an excellent starting point and will link you to more authoritative sources in its references section.
Can I share a specific date's history page?+
Yes. When you navigate to a specific date using the date picker or Previous/Next buttons, the URL does not change dynamically in this version — but you can share the page URL and the visitor will see today's date when they open it. For a fully shareable date-specific URL, bookmark or copy the link after navigating and share the direct Wikipedia "On This Day" page for that date (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_1 for events on January 1). We plan to add URL-based date sharing in a future update.
